Non-Abelian Debye screening length beyond leading order.

چکیده
In quantum electrodynamics, static electric fields are screened at non-zero temperatures by charges in the plasma. The inverse screening length, or Debye mass, may be analyzed in perturbation theory and is of order eT at relativistic temperatures. An analogous situation occurs when non-Abelian gauge theories are studied perturbatively, but the perturbative analysis breaks down when corrections of order e2T are considered. At this order, the Debye mass depends on the non-perturbative physics of confinement, and a perturbative “definition” of the Debye mass as the pole of a gluon propagator does not even make sense. In this work, we show how the Debye mass can be defined nonperturbatively in a manifestly gauge invariant manner (in vector-like gauge theories with zero chemical potential). In addition, we show how the O(e2T ) correction could be determined by a fairly simple, three-dimensional, numerical lattice calculation of the perimeter-law behavior of large, adjoint-charge Wilson loops.

On the smallest screening mass in hot QCD
The increasing focus on unquenched lattice simulations has revived interest also in gluonic screening masses, whose inverses characterise the longest length scales at which thermal fluctuations are correlated in a hot non-Abelian plasma. We fill an apparent gap in the literature concerning the theoretical structure of one of the relevant screening masses (the one which equals twice the Debye ma...

متن کاملNext-to-leading order Debye mass for the quark-gluon plasma.
The Debye screening mass for a quark-gluon plasma at high temperature is calculated to next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling constant from the correlator of two Polyakov loops. The result agrees with the screening mass defined by the location of the pole in the gluon propagator as calculated by Rebhan. It is logarithmically sensitive to nonperturbative effects associated with the screening ...
متن کاملDebye Screening at Finite Temperature , Revisited ∗ )
We present an alternative way to calculate the screening of the static potential between two charges in (non)abelian gauge theories at high temperatures. Instead of a loop expansion of a gauge boson self-energy, we evaluate the energy shift of the vacuum to order e 2 after applying an external static magnetic field and extract a temperature-and momentum-dependent dielectric permittivity. The Ha...
متن کاملDebye screening in strongly coupled N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we examine the behavior of correlators of Polyakov loops and other operators in N =4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at non-zero temperature. The implications for Debye screening in this strongly coupled non-Abelian plasma, and comparisons with available results for thermal QCD, are discussed.
